Teaching Assistants and Fellows

Ask your graduate advisor and department faculty and staff about financial support available specifically for your degree program.  Many departments offer research assistantships, graduate assistantships, teaching assistantships, teaching fellowships and scholarships.

  • Research assistants (RAs) support professors conducting research projects.
  • Graduate assistants (GAs) perform general tasks in departments across campus.
  • Teaching assistants (TAs) support professors with teaching duties.
  • Teaching fellows (TFs) receive assignments to take full responsibility for teaching lower-level courses.

Additional types of student employment opportunities are available in many departments.

RA, GA, TA and TF positions provide funds for many master’s and doctoral students.  Each department or program has its own requirements and expectations for their assistants and fellows.  Most require 20 hours of work per week.  Many assistantship positions include health insurance eligibility.

Scholarships focusing on a specific industry or academic discipline may be available through your individual department.  Whether funded by a departmental endowment or from an outside source, your program’s faculty and staff will be the most knowledgeable about these opportunities.

Fellowships, assistantships and departmental scholarships do not require repayment and are generally awarded based on your prior academic accomplishments and qualifications.  To inquire about or to apply for departmental support, contact your department or your academic graduate adviser.
